WHAT IS IBDP?

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a two-year pre-university curriculum designed for students aged 16 to 19. Recognized globally, it emphasizes not only academic excellence but also the development of personal, emotional, and social skills needed to thrive in a complex and interconnected world

The programme’s philosophy is grounded in the belief that education should go beyond exams—it should nurture curiosity, intercultural understanding, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Rooted in inquiry-based learning, the IBDP encourages students to think critically, communicate effectively, and understand diverse perspectives. Its balanced framework — combining six academic subjects with the DP Core (Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity, Service) — nurtures both intellectual and personal growth. The IBDP fosters independent research, critical thinking, creativity, and service-mindedness.

At its heart, the IBDP believes that education should inspire not just academic success but lifelong learning, empathy, and responsibility toward the world.

  1. The DP Core: What Makes Us Different

📚 Extended Essay (EE): Learning to Investigate & Reflect

A 4,000-word independent research project on a topic of your choice. You become the inquirer and knowledgeable expert, conducting original research, developing thinking skills through critical analysis, and practicing academic integrity. Faculty mentorship supports your journey, developing resilience when challenges arise.

🤔 Theory of Knowledge (TOK): Learning to Think Critically

An interdisciplinary course exploring how we know what we know. TOK develops critical thinking across all subjects, examining how different cultures, disciplines, and individuals construct knowledge. You grapple with real-world dilemmas (healthcare ethics, artificial intelligence, climate science), recognizing that knowledge is complex and assumptions matter.

❤️ Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): Learning Through Doing

CAS develops the caring, principled, balanced learner. Through CAS projects, you:

  • Create art, music, performances, innovations
  • Engage in Activity for physical, mental, and social well-being
  • Serve your community with empathy and responsibility

CAS isn’t just an add-on, it’s where ATLs come alive. You develop resilience through challenge, confidence through creation, empathy through service, and reflection on your growth.

The IB Learner Profile: Who We Aim to Develop

We nurture the ten attributes of the IB Learner Profile, developing students who are inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective. Through every lesson, assessment, and project, our learners grow as internationally minded leaders.

🔍 Inquirers

We nurture natural curiosity and a love of learning. Students ask critical questions, conduct independent research, and explore multiple perspectives across disciplines. They develop research skills through the Extended Essay, TOK investigations, and subject-based inquiries.

🧠 Knowledgeable

Students develop comprehensive knowledge across all six subject groups, exploring significant concepts and grappling with authentic global issues. They understand not just “what” but “why” connecting knowledge across disciplines and applying it to real-world contexts.

💭 Thinkers

Critical and creative thinking is embedded in every IBDP class. Through Theory of Knowledge, students examine assumptions, analyze arguments, and synthesize complex information. They solve problems systematically and think strategically about challenges.

🌍 Communicators

Fluency in multiple languages, both written and spoken, is fundamental. Students communicate effectively across cultures, express complex ideas clearly, and listen actively to diverse viewpoints. Our language acquisition programs develop proficiency alongside cultural competence.

👥 Risk-Takers

IBDP students embrace challenge and uncertainty with confidence. They experiment in science labs, create original artworks, present research findings, and lead CAS projects comfortable with failure as a pathway to growth.

Principled

We develop students who act with integrity and ethical responsibility. Through CAS, students serve their communities. Through TOK, they examine ethical dilemmas. They understand that knowledge carries responsibility and take action for good.

🎯 Balanced

The IBDP demands intellectual rigour alongside physical, emotional, and social well-being. Our programs encourage students to balance study with activity and reflection, developing resilience and wholeness.

🤔 Reflective

Self-awareness and metacognition are cultivated throughout the DP. Students regularly assess their learning, set goals, and track growth. The CAS Reflection component and Extended Essay process deepen self-understanding.

❤️ Open-Minded

Students respect diverse cultures, perspectives, and beliefs. They challenge stereotypes, engage across differences, and seek to understand viewpoints different from their own. International mindedness permeates our curriculum.

🤝 Caring

Beyond academic excellence, IBDP students develop empathy and compassion. Through CAS, they engage in meaningful service. Through collaborative learning, they support peers. They recognize their role in a broader global community.

Approaches to Learning (ATLs): How We Teach & Learn

At DPS East, we don’t just teach content, we teach students how to learn. Five clusters of Approaches to Learning skills empower our IBDP students to become independent, lifelong learners.

Our curriculum weaves Approaches to Learning (ATLs) seamlessly into every subject:

Thinking Skills: Critical and creative problem-solving

Research Skills: Effective inquiry, analysis, and academic honesty

Communication Skills: Expressing ideas confidently in multiple languages and media

Self-Management Skills: Organization, time management, and personal resilience

Social Skills: Collaboration, empathy, and leadership

How ATLs Are Embedded Across All Subjects

ATLs are not taught separately, they’re woven into every lesson, lab, essay, and discussion:

Subject

ATL Development

Language & Literature

Critical thinking (analyzing texts), communication (class discussions, presentations), research skills (literary analysis)

Language Acquisition

Social skills (conversation practice), communication (cross-cultural dialogue), affective skills (confidence building)

Individuals & Societies

Research skills (primary & secondary sources), critical thinking (evaluating perspectives), self-management (essay projects)

Sciences

Research skills (lab practicals), critical thinking (experimental design), self-management (data analysis)

Mathematics

Thinking skills (problem-solving, pattern recognition), self-management (long-term projects), research skills (data interpretation)

The Arts

Creative thinking (artistic expression), collaboration (ensemble work), reflection (process portfolios)

TOK

Critical thinking (argument analysis), reflection (epistemological awareness), open-mindedness (examining diverse knowledge systems)

Extended Essay

All five ATL clusters—the EE is a masterclass in independent research, critical thinking, self-management, and intellectual reflection

CAS

Social skills (teamwork), self-management (commitment), affective skills (empathy, responsibility)

Assessment: Fair, Comprehensive, and Rigorous

IBDP assessment combines:

External examinations marked by international examiners (ensuring global consistency)

Internal assessments including coursework, projects, oral presentations, and lab work (capturing authentic learning)

Continuous evaluation across two years (recognizing growth and effort, not just final exams)

This multifaceted approach ensures authentic assessment of deep understanding aligned with the Learner Profile and ATLs, not just memorization.

Grading: Each subject is scored 1-7. Combined with up to 3 bonus points from TOK and EE, students can earn a maximum of 45 points. Universities worldwide recognize and value IBDP scores for admissions.

CAS in Action (student-led initiatives and reflections)

At DPS Bangalore East, Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) is where learning moves beyond the classroom. It encourages students to apply their knowledge, passions, and skills to real-world contexts,  fostering empathy, leadership, and personal growth.

Through student-led projects, learners create art, organize community drives, lead fitness or environmental initiatives, and collaborate on social-impact campaigns. Each experience helps them develop resilience, teamwork, and self-awareness.

Reflection is central to CAS, students document their journeys, challenges, and achievements, connecting their experiences to the IB Learner Profile and Approaches to Learning (ATLs).

In essence, CAS at DPS East helps students become not just successful learners, but responsible, compassionate changemakers.

By actively participating in community initiatives, students learn that education is not confined to classrooms — it’s about understanding the world, taking action, and making a meaningful difference.
